Everyday Alteration
Pants Hemming Helsinki
Lahkeiden lyhennys. Trousers, jeans, chinos, and formal pants shortened with the correct finish for the fabric, done at our Liisankatu studio.
Pants hemming (Lahkeiden lyhennys or Housujen lyhennys) is our most common alteration. It sounds simple, and for most trousers it is, but the right technique depends on the fabric, the original cuff, and the intended look. A blind hem is not the same as a jean hem is not the same as a cuffed trouser. At Double Stitch by Sumu, we do each correctly.
Come in wearing the shoes you plan to wear with the pants. Heel height changes hem position by more than people expect, and pinning at the wrong length is the most common cause of hems that look off.
Pants We Hem
- Trousers and formal pants (blind hem, invisible machine hem)
- Jeans with original-cuff hem, preserving the factory finish
- Jeans with standard shortened hem when preferred
- Chinos and casual pants with matched top-stitching
- Cuffed trousers (cuff removal, shortening, reconstruction)
- Children's trousers, with or without growth allowance
- Suit trousers with working-button cuff preservation
- Stretch and technical fabric with fabric-specific thread and stitch choice

Pin the Length
We pin the correct length and confirm with you how you want them to sit: full break, half break, or cropped.
- Step 3

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know the right length for my pants?
Wear the shoes you plan to pair with the pants and we will pin the length in person. Standard menswear sits at a quarter-break on the shoe. Cropped lengths sit at the ankle. We will confirm how you want them before sewing.
Do you preserve the original cuff on jeans?
Yes. Original-cuff jean hemming is common at our studio. We remove the original hem, shorten the leg from above, and reattach the factory-finished cuff so the jean still looks factory-hemmed.
Can you hem stretch or technical fabric pants?
Yes. Stretch pants, athletic wear, and technical fabric need specific thread and stitch choice to keep the stretch and seal. We handle these correctly rather than using a generic straight stitch.
How much does pants hemming cost in Helsinki?
Standard pants hemming starts at 25 euros. Original-cuff jean hemming is from 35 euros. Cuffed trousers with reconstruction are from 45 euros. Suit trousers with working buttons are from 55 euros.
Can I wait while you hem a simple pair?
Occasionally, if our schedule allows and the hem is straightforward, yes. Most pants are dropped off and picked up a few days later. Call ahead if you need a while-you-wait hem.
