Custom and Made-to-Measure Clothing Helsinki

Bespoke garments drafted from your measurements, designed with you, and sewn in our Helsinki studio. Mittatilaus tailoring for weddings, formal occasions, and pieces you will actually wear.

Custom and made-to-measure clothing at Double Stitch by Sumu in Helsinki

Custom clothing is clothing made for your body. Not your size, your body. At Double Stitch by Sumu, our Custom and Made-to-Measure Helsinki service starts with a conversation about what you need, and ends with a garment drafted from your measurements, designed to your taste, and sewn by hand at our Liisankatu studio.

People come to us for custom work for one of a few reasons. They cannot find what they are looking for in stores. They want a piece that reflects a specific idea or a heritage fabric. They are planning a wedding or a formal event and want the dress to be theirs. Or they have a beloved old garment they want reimagined as something wearable today. We handle all of those.

A Mittatilaus piece from our studio is not fast. A custom wedding gown takes four to six months from first conversation to final fitting. A custom dress for a formal event is usually six to ten weeks. What you get is a garment that fits, expresses you, and that you will want to keep.

What We Create

From custom bridal to reimagined heirlooms, every piece is drafted, fitted, and finished in our Helsinki studio.

Custom Wedding Gowns

Designed and made specifically for you. We draft a paper pattern from your measurements, build a muslin test garment, sew the gown in your chosen fabrics, and fit over two to three visits. Fabric, silhouette, neckline, sleeves, back details, train length, and bustle are all your choices.

Bridesmaid Dresses

Custom coordinated dresses for the full party, or one made-to-measure dress in the chosen color. Each dress drafted individually so everyone is comfortable and photographs well.

Prom and Formal Dresses

For prom, galas, balls, and holiday parties. Custom formalwear lets you choose the silhouette that suits your body rather than the silhouette a shop happened to stock.

Mittatilauspuvut (Made-to-Measure Suits and Dresses)

Tailored suits, custom day dresses, and cocktail dresses drafted from your measurements and designed with you.

Custom Blouses, Skirts, and Separates

For clients who love particular fabrics, want to match a specific piece, or have a design in mind that is not available ready-made anywhere in Helsinki.

Upcycled and One-of-a-Kind Pieces

Reimagine a grandmother's wedding dress as a christening gown. Turn a beloved but outdated coat into a blazer. Combine heritage fabrics into something new and wearable. Some of our favorite work.

How the Custom Process Works

Custom work is collaborative. Here is how we move from a first conversation to a finished piece.

  1. 01

    Initial Consultation

In studio or over video. We talk about the occasion, garment, fabric options, inspiration, and timeline. Bring images, fabric swatches, or sketches. If you do not know exactly what you want, we help narrow it down. First consultation is free.

  2. 02

    Design, Measurements, and Quote

We take detailed measurements and confirm the design direction. A written quote covers the piece from concept to final fitting.

  3. 03

    Paper Pattern and Toile

For complex pieces like wedding gowns, structured dresses, and suits, we draft a paper pattern and build a muslin test garment. You come in for a muslin fitting so we can confirm shape, seams, and balance before cutting the real fabric.

  4. 04

    Fabric Sourcing

We source together, either from our suppliers or a specific vendor you prefer. We work happily with fabric you have brought us, inherited, or saved.

  5. 05

    Construction and First Fitting

The garment is sewn. You come in for a first fitting at the half-finished stage so we can adjust before final finishing.

  6. 06

    Final Fitting and Delivery

Fine-tuning for length, fit, and finishing. For gowns, we work through bustle, hem, and bodice precision. You leave with your finished piece, steamed and ready to wear.

Bridal: Custom Wedding Gowns in Helsinki

A wedding gown is the most complex kind of custom garment, often the most personal, and always the highest-stakes.

Our bridal service is built around three ideas. The gown should be yours. The fit should be perfect. The experience should be calm. We do not pressure decisions. We do not sell fabrics you do not love. We do not rush fittings. We build one gown at a time in our studio and stay with you from concept to the final steam before your wedding day.

We work with all silhouettes, all necklines, and all fabric preferences. We are comfortable with modest bridal construction, modern minimalist gowns, traditional ballgowns, and everything in between. If you have an inspiration photo, we can design something in that spirit without copying it.

Fabric and Sustainability

Not every piece of fabric is equally made. We prefer natural fibers, deadstock fabric, and suppliers who know where their cloth comes from. When the design allows, we use European-woven fabrics to reduce shipping footprint.

We are also happy to work with fabric you have inherited, bought traveling, or saved for the right project. Upcycling is part of our practice, not a marketing angle. Some of the most meaningful pieces we have made are built from existing garments.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a custom wedding dress cost in Helsinki?

Custom wedding gowns at our Helsinki studio start at 1,800 euros and typically range from 2,500 to 4,500 euros depending on fabric, structure, detail, and fitting complexity. The first consultation is free. Exact price is quoted after the design conversation.

How long does a custom wedding dress take?

Plan for six months from first consultation to wedding day. Four months is the minimum for simpler designs. Anything shorter depends on fabric availability and our current schedule. If your date is closer than this, contact us anyway.

Can I bring my own fabric?

Yes. Many clients do. We review the fabric to make sure it suits the design and tell you honestly if something will not work. We are equally happy to source fabric together from our suppliers or from a specific vendor you choose.

Do you design the piece, or do I need to come with a design?

Both work. Some clients arrive with a clear design idea or a Pinterest board. Others come with a feeling, a fabric, and an occasion. We design collaboratively, and if you do not know exactly what you want we help narrow it down.

Where are you located?

Double Stitch by Sumu is at Liisankatu 9 LH3, 00170 Helsinki, in the Kruununhaka neighborhood. Walking distance from the Helsinki city center, close to public transport.

Do you ship outside Helsinki?

We can ship a finished piece anywhere in Finland or the EU once the work is complete, but fittings need to happen in person at our studio. For bridal pieces, plan your travel around the fitting schedule.

Can you reimagine an inherited or heirloom garment?

Yes. Reimagining heirloom garments is some of our favorite work. A grandmother's wedding dress can become a christening gown, an outdated coat can become a modern blazer, and heritage fabrics can become new pieces. Bring the garment in and we will discuss what is possible.
