Alterations and tailoring at Double Stitch by Sumu, an ompelimo in central Helsinki

When a garment does not hang right, it is rarely the garment's fault. Most ready-to-wear clothing is cut to a generic average, and most bodies are not generic. At Double Stitch by Sumu, our Alterations and Tailoring Helsinki service reshapes off-the-rack pieces so they fit your exact measurements, posture, and movement.

If you have bought a blazer with beautiful fabric but cuffs that swallow your hands, or trousers that fit the waist but drag along the floor, we fix the problem so the garment finally works. Our clients include people who value good clothes and want them to last, brides and grooms preparing for weddings, professionals who want workwear that actually flatters, and parents growing their children's wardrobes without waste.

As a full-service ompelimo in central Helsinki, we handle everything from a five-minute hem to a three-fitting wedding dress transformation. Every alteration is done by hand or on professional machines in our Liisankatu studio by Sumu, a Helsinki-based tailor who has spent a career in sewing.

Our Alteration and Tailoring Services

The full range of clothing alterations common in Helsinki, from quick fixes to complex bridal work.

Pants Hemming (Housujen lyhennys)

Our most common alteration. We shorten trousers, jeans, chinos, and formal pants with the correct finish: original cuff preserved, invisible blind hem, jean-specific hem for denim, or clean top-stitched hem for casual pants.

Waist and Seat Adjustments

Take in or let out trousers, skirts, and dresses at the waist. We also rebalance the seat-to-waist relationship on pants that fit the thigh but gap at the back.

Sleeve Shortening and Cuffs

Jacket, shirt, and coat sleeves. On tailored jackets we preserve working cuff buttons and shorten from the shoulder when that is the right approach. On shirts we maintain the original cuff shape.

Dress Alterations

Taper the bodice, shorten the hem, adjust straps, take in the waist, raise or lower necklines, rework sleeves. Common dress alterations are usually ready within a week.

Blouse and Shirt Adjustments

Take in the sides for a defined shape, shorten sleeves and body, replace buttons, adjust collars so shirts sit the way you want them to.

Jacket and Blazer Tailoring

Shoulder, sleeve, body, and length adjustments. This is complex work that we quote in person after seeing the construction.

Wedding Gown Alterations Helsinki

Bustle construction, hem adjustments, bodice shaping, strap and sleeve work, and built-in support where needed. Most gowns need two to three fittings. Book six to eight weeks before your date.

Bridesmaid Dress Alterations

Length and side-seam adjustments across full bridal parties or single dresses, so every bridesmaid is comfortable and photographs well.

Kids' Clothing Alterations

Extending the life of a good coat or uniform rather than replacing it every year. We take in waists, add growth allowance, replace zippers, and repair school and sports clothing.

How Our Alteration Process Works

Good alteration is mostly a fitting problem. The sewing is the easy part. Getting the fit right is the craft.

  1. Step 1

    Come in for a Fitting

Wear, or bring along, the shoes and undergarments you plan to wear with the garment. Heel height changes hemlines. Foundation garments change fit.

  2. Step 2

    We Pin, Mark, and Confirm

Stand, sit, walk, raise your arms. The garment needs to work in motion, not just standing still. We pin every adjustment and confirm together before you leave.

  3. Step 3

    Sewn in Studio

No work is sent out. Every alteration is done at our Liisankatu address by Sumu, using hand finishing where it matters and professional machines where it belongs.

  4. Step 4

    Final Fitting

You try it on once more to confirm. If anything is off, we adjust it. Simple work is often a single visit. Complex pieces take two or three.

Wedding and Formal Wear Specialization

Wedding gown alterations are their own craft. A gown often has an underdress, a shell, boning, built-in cups, and a train. Each layer has to be altered in order, and each layer has to move with the others.

We specialize in this work in Helsinki and handle:

  • Bustle construction (American, French, ballroom, and lace-specific options)
  • Hem alterations on lace, tulle, satin, and beaded gowns
  • Bodice reshaping, take-in, and support adjustments
  • Strap addition, shortening, or removal
  • Sleeve addition for traditional or cultural preferences
  • Size reduction up to a few sizes, with honest assessment of limits
  • Final steam and presentation before your wedding day

For bridal parties, we coordinate fittings so everyone is sewn and ready together, well ahead of the wedding.

Why Alter Instead of Buying New

Two reasons: fit and sustainability.

Off-the-rack clothing is designed for statistical bodies. A well-altered garment fits you, which is the reason clothing looks good on the people it looks good on. No amount of quality fabric compensates for a bad fit. Altering a piece you already own is almost always cheaper and better-looking than buying new and hoping it fits.

The clothing industry is also one of the largest contributors to landfill in Finland. Extending the life of a garment by even a year meaningfully reduces waste. Our work is part of the circular economy, and every alteration keeps a piece of clothing out of the bin for longer.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much do alterations cost in Helsinki?

Typical alterations at our Helsinki studio start at 25 to 45 euros depending on the garment. A pants hem starts at 25 euros, a dress hem at 40 euros, waist adjustments at 35 euros, and jacket sleeve shortening at 45 euros without working buttons. Wedding gown alterations and complex suit tailoring are quoted in person after fitting, because construction matters.

How long do clothing alterations take?

Standard alterations take five to seven business days. Multiple pieces take seven to ten business days. Wedding gowns need four to eight weeks and should be booked six weeks before the wedding when possible. If you need something faster, call the studio and we will tell you honestly what is possible.

Can you alter a dress that is too small?

Sometimes. We can let out seams up to the seam allowance, which is usually one to two centimeters per seam. For bigger size increases we can add gussets or side panels in matching fabric when the design allows. Bring the dress in and we will look at what can be done.

Do I need an appointment for a fitting?

Yes. Alterations require a try-on and we schedule fittings so each client gets focused attention. Book online or call the studio during opening hours to schedule.

Where are you located?

Double Stitch by Sumu is at Liisankatu 9 LH3, 00170 Helsinki, in the Kruununhaka neighborhood. We are walking distance from the Helsinki city center and Hakaniemi, close to public transport.

Do you hem jeans and keep the original cuff?

Yes. Original-cuff jean hemming is one of our most common repairs. We remove the original hem, shorten the leg from above, and reattach the finished cuff so the jean looks factory-hemmed rather than homemade.

Can you alter formalwear, suits, and tuxedos?

Yes, we alter trousers, shirts, waistcoats, jackets, and full formalwear. Simple work like trouser hemming and waist adjustments is quick. Full jacket tailoring across shoulder, sleeve, and body is complex and priced after fitting.
